Natalie Portman and Jonathan Bailey Begin Filming Thriller ‘Pumping Black’

A moody thriller film set at night with a camera and dramatic lighting on a dark city street.

Cameras have started rolling in the French Alps on Pumping Black, the new thriller led by Jonathan Bailey and Oscar winner Natalie Portman, according to Variety. The production brings together two of the most in-demand actors working today for a story set in the ruthless, high-pressure world of elite professional cycling.

The start of filming is the latest milestone for a project first announced earlier this year ahead of its launch at the Cannes market by Anton Studios. The shoot is expected to continue until early December, using the mountain setting as a dramatic backdrop for a race where ambition, secrecy and survival collide.

A Story of Ambition on Two Wheels

Pumping Black follows Taylor Mace, a 35-year-old professional cyclist who is ageing out of a sport that rarely waits for anyone. At the point when his career should be winding down, he is taken under the wing of Andrea Lathe, a doctor whose own drive for victory and power shapes everything that follows.

As the competition intensifies, Taylor is pushed towards increasingly dark measures to protect both his secret and his lead. That premise places the film in a distinctive corner of the thriller genre, where the physical demands of elite sport meet medical ethics, personal ambition and the fear of being exposed.

Cycling has provided fertile ground for drama before, from doping scandals in real life to stories about teams where loyalty lasts only as long as results do. Pumping Black appears ready to use that world not just as scenery, but as the engine of its tension: every climb, team order and medical decision can change who wins and who is left behind.

    New Faces Join the Cast

Alongside Bailey and Portman, the film already featured Lukas Gage, known to many viewers from The White Lotus, and Alex Akpobome from Industry. As production begins, four more names have joined the ensemble: Daniel Quinn-Toye, Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen, Cesar winner Arieh Worthalter and Emmy winner Tony Hale.

The additions give the cast a notably international feel, mixing British, American, Danish and Belgian talent. Hale, best known for comedy roles including Veep, is an especially interesting piece of casting in a straight thriller, while Worthalter brings recent critical prestige from The Goldman Case. Quinn-Toye and Tonnesen represent a younger generation of European and British screen talent getting a significant feature opportunity.

For Bailey, the film continues an exceptional run that has included Wicked and Jurassic World: Rebirth. For Portman, it follows acclaimed work in May December and adds another demanding leading role to a career that has moved confidently between major studio films, independent cinema and producing.

    Behind the Camera

The film is directed by Mimi Cave, whose previous features Fresh and Holland marked her out as a filmmaker comfortable with unease, dark humour and characters who are not quite what they seem. She works here from a screenplay by Haley Hope Bartels.

Portman is also involved behind the scenes, producing alongside Sophie Mas for their company MountainA. The producing team also includes Stacey Sher for Shiny Penny and Cave and Sebastien Raybaud for Anton Studios, which is fully financing the film and handling worldwide sales, with CAA co-representing the United States.

The creative team includes cinematographer Justin Brown, production designer JC Molina and casting director Kharmel Cochrane, with editing by Martin Pensa, who previously worked with Cave on Fresh. Costume design is by Pierre-Yves Gayraud, whose credits include Cloud Atlas.

Why This Thriller Is One to Watch

On paper, Pumping Black has several ingredients that travel well internationally: two globally recognisable leads, a visually striking Alpine setting, a contained sporting world with its own rules and a moral dilemma that does not depend on local knowledge to understand. That combination helps explain the interest the project generated when it was first presented to buyers at Cannes.

It also arrives at a moment when audiences have shown strong appetite for performance-pressure stories, from sports dramas to psychological thrillers about obsession. The question the film seems to ask is a simple and unsettling one: how far would a person go to stay at the front when their body, their career and their secret are all running out of time?

No release date has been announced yet, and the production still has weeks of filming ahead in the Alps. Readers can follow further entertainment coverage on Verified Weekly as more details, first images and distribution plans emerge.

For now, the start of production confirms that one of the year’s most intriguing casting combinations is officially underway, with Bailey and Portman leading a thriller that promises speed, mountains and consequences at every turn.
